The Zebra Effect

Tabanid horseflies circle zebras about as often as they circle horses, but land far less often. Approaching a striped surface they fail to slow down, and bump off instead of settling.

Tabanid flies find hosts partly by the polarized light reflected off hide and skin. In controlled trials, striped surfaces attracted the fewest flies, and narrower stripes performed best.
