Why Zebra Stripes Stop Mosquitoes (And Why DEET Doesn't Have To)
If you've ever cut a hike short because of mosquitoes, or hesitated before spraying chemicals on your kids, you already know the problem. The standard answer, DEET, works, but it comes with trade-offs many people would rather avoid. At Bug Repellent Clothing, we built our gear around a different idea, one that nature figured out long before we did.
The problem with the usual approach
DEET and permethrin are effective, but they're chemicals you apply directly to skin and clothing. They can irritate skin, damage certain synthetic fabrics and plastics, and many families simply don't love the idea of coating children and pets in them several times a day. The result is a familiar trade-off: protection or peace of mind, but rarely both.
What scientists noticed about zebras
For decades, researchers debated why zebras evolved their bold black-and-white stripes. Camouflage? Temperature control? Social signaling? Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology pointed to a more surprising answer: the stripes interfere with how biting insects see and land. Flies approaching a striped surface fail to decelerate properly and often veer away or bump off rather than landing cleanly. In short, the pattern itself is a defense mechanism.
How we put that science into fabric
Bug Repellent Clothing translates that high-contrast striping into wearable apparel. The pattern is engineered into the garment, so the protection doesn't wash out, wear off, or need reapplying every few hours. You put it on the same way you'd put on any shirt or hoodie, and the defense comes built in.
Safe for the people (and pets) who matter most
Because the protection comes from the pattern rather than a chemical coating, our gear is DEET-free and permethrin-free. That makes it a comfortable choice for kids, for people with sensitive skin, and for anyone who'd rather not think about what's soaking into their skin on a long day outdoors.
