Why Zebra Stripes Stop Mosquitoes (And Why DEET Doesn't Have To)

DEET and permethrin are effective, but they're chemicals you apply directly to skin and clothing. What scientists noticed about zebras

For decades, researchers debated why zebras evolved their bold black-and-white stripes. Camouflage? Temperature control? Social signaling? Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology pointed to a more surprising answer: the stripes interfere with how biting insects see and land. Flies approaching a striped surface fail to decelerate properly and often veer away or bump off rather than landing cleanly. In short, the pattern itself is a defense mechanism.
